PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Gov. Lincoln Chafee says he is considering the possibility that the state might issue driver’s licenses or driving permits to illegal immigrants.

The governor responded Tuesday to questions about a vote by the Board of Governors for Higher Education approving in-state tuition for undocumented students. He said being able to drive would help people get to school or work or look for a job.

The Providence Journal reports that Chafee said he spoke with officials in Utah, one of three states where illegal immigrants can get a driver’s license because no proof of citizenship is required.

The other two states are New Mexico and Washington.
