Providence City Website Disabled by Hacker

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The city of Providence’s web site was disabled briefly after a computer hacker gained access to the server that hosts the site.

David Ortiz, spokesman for Mayor Angel Taveras, said websites of customers of InMotionHosting, the company that hosts the city’s site, were defaced.

Ortiz says the hacker did not compromise the city’s internal servers, data or e-mail. He said the hacker gained access to a server hosting the site at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

WPRI.com captured an image of the site that showed a black screen with a message that read: “Server HackeD by TIGER-M(at)TE (hash)Bangladeshi HackeR.”

InMotionHosting says a “defacement attack” early Sunday morning affected an unspecified number of customers.
