HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra says he wants to build on the connections of the city’s fast-growing West Indian population to boost economic ties with Caribbean nations.

The mayor met over the weekend with a local trade official from the U.S. Commerce Department and the ambassador to the U.S. from Trinidad and Tobago.

The mayor’s office said Tuesday that he will lead an effort to make Bradley International Airport a hub for Air Jamaica. It said Hartford will also look into establishing an office for the Caribbean Community trade bloc and a Caribbean products distribution center.

The West Indian population in Connecticut grew about 50 percent over the last decade. There are some 80,000 West Indians in Connecticut, making up about 2 percent of the state’s population.
