PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island residents are set to celebrate Oscar’s Best Actress nomination of Viola Davis, who grew up in the state and is a graduate of Rhode Island College.

Rhode Island International Film Festival officials say attendees at Sunday night’s party at The Vets downtown will sign a card of congratulations for Davis, help put together a video message for her and cheer her on in the Oscar race.

Davis was nominated for her role as a black maid going public with tales of white Southern employers in the movie “The Help.” That movie is also up for best picture at the Academy Awards.

Davis was raised in Central Falls. In accepting a Screen Actors Guild award last month, Davis told students there to “dream big and dream fierce.”
