MYSTIC, Conn. (AP) — Mystic Seaport says a lack of tourists is forcing it to shut for six weeks this winter.

The museum, which is one of the biggest attractions in Connecticut, operated on a reduced schedule in the past two winters. Next year, it will close from Jan. 2 to Feb. 15.

The Day of New London reports that Spokesman Dan McFadden said the museum has tried different schedules over the years but has not yet found the right mix of days and hours for the winter. It has been trying to come up with plans to become more of a year-round destination.

McFadden said staff members will continue to work during the shutdown, although hours will be reduced slightly for some employees.

Beginning March 31, the museum plans to begin operating seven days a week.
