Hearings to Guide Mass. Tornado Rebuilding; Effort Expected to Cost $100 Million

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Massachusetts’ third largest city is still recovering more than four months after a severe tornado.

A series of public hearings are being held in Springfield this week to develop strategies for rebuilding the hardest-hit areas of the city.

The first public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday night at the Holy Cross gymnasium in the East Forest Park neighborhood.

The hearings are sponsored by Rebuild Springfield, a public-private partnership that hopes to come up with a master plan by December.

The co-chair of the effort, Gerald Hayes, tells the Republican newspaper of Springfield that the hearings are aimed at generating as much community input as possible.

The rebuilding effort is expected to cost more than $100 million, with the city receiving help from the state and federal governments.
